Learn How To Play The Game
The other morning while listening to one of my favorite podcasts “The School of Greatness,” a quote that stood out to me came from Jaspreet Singh of The Minority Mindset. The topic of conversation was the importance of financial literacy and building wealth and when asked what truths he would share based on his life experience, one important truth Jaspreet stated was…“Learn how to play the game.”
When it comes to money and finances, very few people were taught “how to play the game.” I sure was in the dark for years but I did step into the light and a few years ago made a concerted effort to elevate my financial literacy. It paid off in many ways, but what I know to be true is that there is always so much more to learn and money management and wealth building really is an important game to understand. There are so many ebbs and flows to life and living with financial freedom is something worth learning about for a slice of peace of mind. Take it from me, someone who had to actually work hard to let go of a subconscious lack mentality for a long time…it’s still a process. I was told by a healer once that this will be part of my life’s work. At first, it seems like no fun for me, but now, I see it as an exciting and interesting challenge. I will never forget the day, I was told by my mortgage broker, after I closed a commercial deal, that I actually have the talent to be a savvy investor. (We have a mixed-use property.) Let me tell you, that compliment was a shock to the system, because as a creative being, raised with negative money messages, never in my life did I think I had it in me.
“Learn how to play the game,” also is sage advice for living an abundant life on a whole. What does living with abundance actually mean anyway? I love the wisdom of Ken Honda, known as the Zen Millionaire and Author of “Happy Money.” Ken Honda teaches that abundance is about having a nice balance in your life, filled with love, fun, strong relationships, great friends, good health, gratitude, happiness, spirituality and financial security. You can have all the money in the world, but without taking care of your mental and physical health, without love and strong friendships, you can barely enjoy your money. We all know that money doesn’t buy happiness, but it damn sure can relieve some stress and provide a sense of freedom. It’s hard to balance it all, but when we desire to live with an abundance surrounding us, it’s vital to ensure our mind is right.
One coaching client, Diana, was at the end of her rope, dealing with drama at work and home and felt like she lost herself and much of the joy in life. I always stress the importance of self-care, revisiting a spiritual practice and reconnecting to our intuitive wisdom as the keys to snapping out of a serious funk. In a few sessions, she is already starting to feel better, with more clarity on her next steps in life with her career and a commitment to having more fun and setting clear boundaries with people squashing her spirit. Listen, we can’t have the negative energy surrounding us take over. How to push back? Say no, send love, practice forgiveness and a commitment to a healing journey. So much easier said than done. For Diana, financial security is not enough. To live in abundance requires joy, fun, love, peace and freedom to live life on her own terms. Isn’t that what we all desire and deserve?
