Three Benefits of Nurturing Your Inner Artist

1) Creative expression is an opportunity to exercise your right brain and strengthen brain health. The right brain is vital for creativity, imagination, feelings and intuition. Bring forth innovation and masterful problem solving skills when are tapped into your inner artist.

2) Strengthen your emotional intelligence. Connecting to our creativity allows us to tune into our feelings and develop a stronger emotional intelligence so we can understand and have empathy for ourselves and others. This leads to better relationships with those around us and enables us to spot BS and call it for what it is.

3) Art relieves stress! Art is all forms can be fun, anxiety relieving and a key aspect of self-care! I live with an artist and I see first hand how therapeutic art is. Just notice your mood when you listen to a favorite song or when you dance? The key is making it a point to create and surround yourself with art forms you love as much as you can.

Six Tips to Get Your Creative Juices Flowing:

1. Go on an artist date - Growing our artistic sensibility isn't all about making art, sometimes it's about taking it in! Take yourself on a solo excursion to- an art museum, a beautiful garden, a thrift store, a movie to watch something you normally wouldn't see, t anything that intrigues you. Give yourself at least 2 hours for this artist date to enjoy your solo time. Take it all in.

2. Take up one new artistic medium like painting, photography, drawing, cooking, acting, singing, piano playing etc. As we get older, sometimes we forget that we can always learn something new.

3. Cultivate a creative life. Decorate your home in a way that inspires you (plants, paintings, design etc.), start to collect things you love and build a wardrobe that excites you. We only have one life to live. Love your surroundings and ensure you spend time with people who inspire you.

4. Self-care writing practices - Each morning, pull out your journal and write a stream of consciousness every morning (AKA morning pages) to get your thoughts out of your head and onto the page. Like I have talked about many times, writing is healing.

5. Move your body. Do something different. If you always do one thing….try doing another. Sometimes it’s hard to switch things up, but it’s good for you. Blasting music you love always helps.

6. Read books and magazines of fiction that challenge your imagination. Follow your curiosity. What are you drawn towards? Make time. Not easy sometimes, I know.
